Fredericksburg Native Shows Art at the Griffin
Hotels to RememberA Snapshot in Time, an exhibition of original pastel paintings by artist Mary Montague Sikes, will be featured at The Griffin, 723 Caroline Street in Fredericksburg during the month of October.
A Fredericksburg native, Sikes studied art at the University of Mary Washington and the College of William and Mary. In 1980, she earned an MFA in painting from Virginia Commonwealth University where she worked with visiting New York artists Peter Saul, Jane Kaufman, and Diana Kurz. She has been featured in one-person exhibitions in the United States and Canada, including shows at the Anderson Gallery in Richmond, the Marsh Gallery at the University of Richmond, the Creative Arts Center in Fredericksburg, and the Twentieth Century Gallery (now This Century Gallery) in Williamsburg. Her paintings are part of many public and private collections in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean, including Philip Morris, Media General, One Capitol Square in Richmond, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and SuperClubs in Jamaica.
Sikes is a resident artist at Petersburg Regional Art Center. Prince George Art & Frame in Williamsburg represents some of her work.
Artwork in the Hotels to Remember exhibition was selected from paintings Sikes created for her book project. Hotels to Remember, a 220-page coffee table book, focuses on twenty memorable hotels the artist/author visited during some of her many travel experiences in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Giclee prints of all the paintings are available.
Hotels to RememberA Snapshot in Time will open October 2 with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. and will continue on view until October 29. A book signing will be held prior to the reception from 6 to 7 p.m.
