Mary Montague Sikes is a Virginia author who has long possessed a fascination with jungles. An artist as well as a writer, she once painted a series of large, jungle-related paintings. "Jungle Beat" on the cover of Jungle Jeopardy is from that series. Intrigued by the leaf shapes and jungle visions of Henri Rousseau, Monti uses his paintings to inspire the young elementary school artists she teaches.
A graduate of the University of Mary Washington where she majored in psychology and minored in education, Monti studied painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking at the College of William and Mary. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at Virginia Commonwealth University.
