Mary Montague Sikes | Spring 2015

1. Book Release ... My eighth novel, Evening of the Dragonfly (Visit Amazon Now) has been released. My first book signings are scheduled for May:
  • May 9, 2015 | 1:00 to 4:00 pm | Gloucester Arts on the Main, Gloucester, Virginia
  • May 15, 2015 | 6:00 to 9:00 pm | Crossroads Art Center, Richmond, Virginia
  • May 24, 2015 | 11:00 am to 3:00 pm | William and Mary Barnes and Noble, Williamsburg, Virginia
The May 9 and May 15 signings will also feature an exhibition of art work for Farrah Ferand, the heroine in Evening of the Dragonfly.
In my book, Farrah is creating a series of paintings for a one-person art exhibition. Despite emotional problems dealing with the murder of her mother and a romance that seems to be going nowhere, Farrah is preparing for the show that might be the breakthrough for her artist career.
During the month of April, the development of Farrah's paintings for the show is the subject of my blog, Notes Along the Way. For the A to Z Blog Challenge, a new painting, or portion of a new painting, is created each day (except on Sundays) and presented with a blog post. The first post for the letter "A" featured some background on Farrah, the artist. The first painting was called "Moonshine" because when Farrah was a child, her mother and her grandfather told her tales about relatives making and selling moonshine in the back woods of western Virginia. Farrah was intrigued by the stories and wanted to include a painting that relates to her family history in the exhibition. During the month, 20 or more new paintings will be created for the show, including: "Optimism," "Portal to Peace," "Infinity," "Emerging Heart," and more.

2. Art Speaks on the Bay Juried Show ... "So Many Shells on the Beach" - my watercolor painting on Yupo was one of 83 out of over 300 paintings selected for the Art Speaks on the Bay juried art show. Jill Jensen, an artist and curator, served as juror for the exhibition. The opening reception and awards presentation will be May 2, 2015, 4:00 pm at the Bay School of the Arts in Mathews, Virginia.

3. "Paris Picnic" at Prince George Gallery ... On Saturday, May 23, 2015 I will be one of the Prince George Gallery artists participating in the "Paris Picnic" event for the Art Escape open house. I'll be one of the painters working from a still life setup. Other artists will be demonstrating pottery techniques, wood block printing, and Papier Mache sculpture. It should be a fun event at the Williamsburg gallery.

4. Upcoming Acrylic Painting Workshops ...
June 13, 2015 | 10:00 am to 3:00 pm | "Painting Like Georgia" | This Century Art Gallery, Williamsburg, Virginia
June 27, 2015 | 10:00 am to 3:00 pm | "Painting Like Georgia" | Gloucester Arts on Main, Gloucester, Virginia

5. Ward Center for Contemporary Art Grand Opening ... The Center is located at 132 North Sycamore Street, Petersburg, Virginia. The Grand opening will be June 12, 2015, 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Don't miss "Passenger to Paradise" in the main gallery -- a major exhibition of my large acrylic paintings.

Please contact me if you have questions or need directions for any of these events. They should be fun, and I would love to see you at any or all of them.
